Why did the chicken cross the road?

Well, how would the chicken even be aware of the road as a differentiation in the environment, as a lifeform with a rudimentary intelligence? There's every reason to suspect that the chicken would move purely on the basis on instinct and perhaps even a soupçon of reasoning, but there would in no way be a concerted identification of the "road" as a regarded object, per se, to said fowl.
